Constantly learning is key to staying competitive

Workers who do not adopt a growth mindset and constantly upgrade themselves with learning, will be left behind in the current work environment which is in constant flux due to technology.

Vice-president of talent and learning solutions for LinkedIn Asia-Pacific, Ms Ang, encourages the company’s employees to embrace learning, no matter which rung of the ladder they are on.  She said that one of LinkedIn’s key values is “transformation and we encourage our people to demand excellence of themselves”.

She also shared the top three skills that are most in demand now. These skills are called ABC – artificial intelligence (AI), big data and cloud computing. These are skills that are in demand in today’s global digital revolution and they are blurring the lines between the physical, digital and biological spheres. In Singapore, the demand for these ABC skills is compounded by our Smart Nation initiative as the country looks to harness technology to drive transformation across all sectors of the economy.

In addition, soft skills which are not related to information technology are also in demand. This includes critical thinking, adaptability, creativity, communication and management skills, as well as the ability to collaborate. With automation and AI anticipated to drastically change the business landscape, businesses have to rely on a strong talent base with these soft skills to help them remain nimble and efficient.

I concur with Ms Ang’s views articulated in this article. Constant learning keeps you competitive, not just with fellow colleagues but also with technology as well. In the years to come, AI and big data will change and disrupt many, if not all, industries. Every one of us in the will be affected in one way or the other. Constant learning will thus help us stay ahead of the curve.
